EurActiv reported in early October 2014 of fears by expert scientists usingd Ebola disease spread patterns and airline traffic data to predict a 75% chance the virus could be imported to France and a 50% chance it could hit Britain by the end of October 2014.

Also on the 6 October 2014 news sources reported that a nurse who treated an Ebola patient in a Madrid hospital had tested positive for the virus herself. She was believed to be the first person to contract the disease in Europe.

The European Commission asked Spain to explain how the nurse could have become infected. A hospital investigation was under way.

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría took control of the government’s management of the Ebola crisis on the 10 October 2014, announcing that the government would be creating a committee of scientific experts on the virus. The crisis committee would be formed by representatives from the ministries of Defense, Interior, Presidency, Economy and Justice, local health representatives and scientists.

Travellers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea arriving at London's Heathrow airport terminal 1 started to be screened for Ebola symptoms on 14 October, in an attempt to find those infected with the virus. France also announced Ebola screenings in Paris airports.
