Romania’s democracy in reverse gear – en garde, EU!

The recent rolling back of democratic achievements in Romania is just the latest episode in a series of many challenges to the EU’s freedoms and values that have surfaced in member states during the on-going economic crisis. In this Commentary, Corina Stratulat and Paul Ivan argue that dealing effectively and early on with democratic problems, like those occurring in Romania, is as important for the EU as resolving its euro/economic crisis.
