In a continuation of the horror of the experiences of many migrants fleeing conflict, poverty and persecution in many countries news on the 15 September 2014 from the BBC, EurActiv and other sources reported on a story from two survivors of about 500 migrants from North Africa and the Middle East who had been deliberately killed by human traffickers the previous week, who sank their boat following a dispute. If confirmed, this would be the worst incident of its kind, amounting to mass murder, an official of the International Organisation for Migration told EurActiv.

According to the IOM 'These reports point to a growing death toll off Europe’s shores which this year already approaches 3,000. That’s nearly four times the figure from 2013, which IOM’s Missing Migrants Project estimated to be 700 deaths.

'The numbers dying off Europe’s coasts are shocking and unacceptable', said IOM’s Director General William Lacy Swing, 'These are women, children and men who only hope for a more dignified life. The risks they take reflect their desperation and we cannot keep abandoning them to their fate'.

The migrants had first left from an Egyptian port on the 6 September 2014 and were composed of people from a range of countries in Africa and the Middle East, but there were said to be a large numbers fleeing from the troubles in Gaza. The 'smugglers' were said to be Egyptians and Palestinians.
