The process of EU enlargement to the Balkans, in its current form, could be heading towards a bottleneck, argues Corina Stratulat in this Policy Brief. The fact that the Balkan countries seem to be moving in two gears, that member states appear to be taking the region for granted and that the Commission’s language struggles to inspire people on the ground are three main risks that could get the dossier into a jam. The author calls on the EU to shake off its ‘enlargement blues’ and be more pro-active in order to overcome these challenges and go back to making foreign policy history. |
