Summary: With fears of Russia growing after its intervention in Ukraine in 2014, NATO member states in Eastern Europe would like NATO to direct a planned missile-defense system against Russia as well. The calls divided the military alliance. NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen told The Guardian in an interview on the 26 August 2014 that NATO was likely to set up 'permanent' new bases in eastern Europe. The issue would be discussed at the NATO Summit in Wales in September 2014. However, EurActiv reported that Germany was opposed to new NATO deployments in Europe. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had repeatedly said that the 1997 NATO-Russia Act should remain valid. The principle of collective defence was at the very heart of NATO’s founding treaty. It remained a unique and enduring principle that bound its members together, committing them to protect each other and setting a spirit of solidarity within the Alliance. |
