Germany’s Siemens and Japan’s Mitsubishi gave details in June 2014 of their formal bid for parts of French engineering giant Alstom. The joint effort was aimed at blocking a bid by the US General Electric for Alstom. Siemens and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries upped their offer to buy the energy business of France's Alstom on the 20 June 2014. This move came a day after rival bidder General Electric had improved its offer. France24 and BBC News reported on the 20 June 2014 that the French government said it preferred General Electric as the new owner of Alstom’s energy business and announced plans to take a 20% in the French engineering group. France24 reported on the 21 June 2014 that Alstom said its board had given the green light to the proposed tie-up with General Electric on the in which the US conglomerate will pay €12.35bn for the French group’s energy business. The French government said on the22 June 2014 that it had secured an option to buy a 20% stake in Alstom from current holder Bouygues, clearing the final obstacle for a tie-up between Alstom and General Electric. |
