Further reports discussing who would become the new European Commission President for the period 2014-2019, as well as the filling of other key EU institutional posts. EurActiv reported on the 17 June 2014 that the leading candidate for the European Commission presidency, Jean-Claude Juncker, had rejected a request by UK Prime Minister David Cameron that the next British commissioner be given charge of a 'cluster' of key portfolios. EurActiv and EUObserver reported on the 18 June 2014 that the European Union, supported by Germany, was working to meet an Italian demand to shift focus from austerity towards growth, in a deal that could help cement Jean-Claude Juncker as the next European Commission president, despite UK opposition. BBC News reported on the 21 June 2014 on a meeting In Paris of nine left-wing heads of government in the EU. The leaders said it was important to respect the spirit of the May 2014 European Parliament elections, which had returned a centre-right majority. Thus, they would support Mr Juncker as the next European Commission President. UK Prime Minister David Cameron held talks with Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council on the 23 June 2014, ahead of the crucial European Council on the 26-27 June 2014. He intimated that he would insist that a vote took place on the issue of the next European Commission President at the meeting. |
