Spanish parliament approves succession from Juan Carlos to Felipe VI / Felipe VI formally proclaimed Spain’s new king

The Spanish parliament gave the green light to King Juan Carlos' abdication on the 11 June 2014, paving the way for a royal succession.

News of the intention of King Juan Carlos to abdicate had led to protests against the monarchy in Spain, but also a rise in support.

Juan Carlos himself formally signed the bill to abdicate at a ceremony in the Royal Palace in Madrid on the 1 June 2014.

Felipe VI was formally proclaimed Spain's new king on the 19 June 2014.
