The European Commission published a reply on 28 May 2014 to the second European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), titles 'One of US'. The 'One of Us' initiative had asked the European Union to end the financing of activities which presuppose the destruction of human embryos, in particular in the areas of research, development aid and public health. They collected over a million signatures from over seven EU member states, as required. Its organisers met with the Commission on 9 April 2014 and had a public hearing in the European Union on 10 April. Following the meeting and having studied their request, the Commission decided not to submit any legislative proposal, given that the existing funding framework - which had recently debated and agreed by EU Member States and the European Parliament - was the appropriate one. The lack of agreement between Member States concerning sexual and reproductive rights was further highlighted in May 2015, as France tried to come up with a new proposal abortion and maternal healthcare. |
