Press Release: Cyprus Steering Group: Commission enhances support to the Cyprus settlement process / Cyprus president says gas can help reunification

On 27 March 2014, José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, chaired a meeting of the Cyprus Steering Group in Brussels. The Group assessed the situation following the resumption of fully-fledged settlement talks in February 2014. The Group also reviewed European Commission's support to the negotiation process under United Nations auspices and help to the Turkish Cypriot Community in preparing for the implementation of the acquis following a settlement. The Group expressed full support to the two parties to bring the process to a successful end.

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said in April 2014 that the discovery of natural gas around Cyprus could galvanize international efforts to resolve the long-standing division of Cyprus, and smooth development of an alternative energy supply source to Russia.
