The UK, Poland, and Sweden proposed sending an EU police mission to Ukraine to build up its law enforcement bodies in the wake of February 2014 revolution, according to an informal paper seen by EUObserver and other media sources. Vladimir Putin said on the 9 April 2014 he hoped talks between Russia, Ukraine, the EU and US due on the following week would have a "positive" outcome, but warned that Ukraine's interim government should not do anything that could not "be fixed later". On the 10 April 2014, Russia was suspended from the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe in protest at Moscow's behaviour towards Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. NATO released satellite photographs on the same day showing Russian military equipment, including fighter jets and tanks, that it described as part of a deployment of as many as 40,000 troops near the border with Ukraine. Ukraine's interim prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk met regional leaders in the east of the country on the 11 April 2014 on a mission to end a stand-off with pro-Russia protesters. |
