Britain summoned the Spanish ambassador following the "provocative incursion" by a ship into Gibraltan waters on the 1 April 2014.

David Lidington, the Europe minister, said he was extremely concerned that a Spanish research vessel conducted a survey in UK territorial waters accompanied by a military police boat.

Some tension has arisen between the UK and Spain over Gibraltar, namely regarding border control issues.
