Many EU countries raised their voices in February 2014 against maintaining development aid for Uganda after its government tightened the legislation against homosexuality despite warnings from the international community.

President of the European Paliament Martins Schulz said on the 31 March 2014 that imprisoning gays and lesbians for their sexuality was a “disgrace” that should disqualify offending countries from EU aid.
