Same-sex marriage now legal as first couples wed

The first same-sex weddings took place took place on the 29 March 2014 after marriage became legal in England and Wales at midnight on the 28 March 2014.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the first same-sex marriages as sending a 'powerful message' about equality in Britain.
