Estonian premier Andrus Ansip signals departure / Estonia swears in youngest EU Prime Minister

Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip announced on the 23 February 2014 that he would be standing down from office early to make pave the way for a successor. The country was set to hold elections in 2015, with Ansip’s party polling badly. Mr Ansip formally announced his resignation on the 4 March 2014.

It is anticipated that any interim government that would continue Ansip's policies. President Toomas Hendrik was expected to nominate European Commission Vice President and Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas, from the outgoing premier's own Reform Party.

Taavi Rõivas was sworn on the 26 March 2014 as the new Prime Minister of Estonia. The 34-year old politician from the liberal Reform Party has vowed to make security a priority, as Estonia felt vulnerable from Russia in the aftermath of Crimea’s annexation.
