New research published on the 25 March 2014 by the (United Kingdom) Committee on Standards in Public Life showed that the UK’s long-term decline in public perceptions of standards in public life was part of a broader trend across Western democracies.

Three quarters of Europeans thought corruption was a 'major or widespread' problem in their political institutions, according to this research. The countries worst hit by the European economic crisis recorded larger decreases in trust in political institutions, with public perceptions of corruption above 90 percent.
