On the 19 March 2014, BBC News reported on the Golden Residence Permit programme, an initiative the Portuguese government has been putting forward since 2012 to attract more foreign investment.

By then, the Portuguese government said it had issued 734 so-called "Golden Visas" and that it had generated more than 440m euros.
