Reports of developments on the 15-17 March 2014 in the crisis affecting Ukraine and the region of Crimea. In particular, you can find information relating to an UN Security Council debate on the 15 March 2014 on the threatened referendum in Crimea on the 16 March 2014 regarding seceding from Ukraine and joining Russia. Owing to the negative vote of Russia, one of its permanent members, the United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution which urged countries not to recognise the results of the referendum. The BBC and other news sources reported on the evening of the 16 March 2014 that 96% of Crimean voters had backed joining Russia and seceding from Ukraine in the referendum. Crowds of pro-Moscow voters celebrated in the main city of Simferopol, and Crimea's pro-Russia leader had said he would apply to join Russia on the 17 March 2014. But many Crimeans loyal to the Ukrainian government in Kiev boycotted the referendum, and the EU and US condemned it as illegal. EU foreign ministers were due to meet in Brussels on the 17 March 2014 to discuss further sanctions against Russia. |
