On the 13 March 2014, the European Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, announced €81 million of new EU support to the Central African Republic (CAR) during a joint visit to the country with French Minister for Development, Pascal Canfin, and German Minister for Cooperation, Gerd Müller.

However, EU sources told EurActiv on the same day that the plan to deploy peacekeepers in the CAR was in jeopardy because of the failure of European governments to provide soldiers and equipment.
