Press Release: Council confirms deal on European political parties

On the 5 March 2014, the Permanent Representatives Committee approved a draft regulation aiming at helping European political parties and their affiliated political foundations to play their role of expressing the political will of EU citizens.

It herewith endorsed a compromise reached between the Greek presidency and representatives of the European Parliament on
25 February 2014.

The Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament adopted the proposals on the 18 March 2014.

The agreement still needed to be endorsed by the full European Parliament, in a vote scheduled for the April 2014 session. The European Commission should table a proposal for improving the rules by mid-2018. The regulation was to apply from 1 January 2017.
