Abstract: The European Union’s Data Retention Directive, adopted in 2006, obliges the Member States to ensure that telecommunications and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) retain various types of data generated by individuals through the use of landline phones, fax machines, mobile phones, and the internet, "in order to ensure that the data are available for the purpose of the investigation, detection and prosecution of serious crime".
