Following the confirmation of 2 cases of African swine fever in wild boar in Lithuania on 24th January 2014, interim protective measures were swiftly adopted by the Commission to regionalise the infected area within Lithuania. The Commission proposed to provisionally exclude the infected area of the EU from certification of exports of live pigs and pork to Russia, but the Russian partners did not accept that. Health Commissioner Tonio Borg expressed his regret over the Russian ban on exports from EU Member States which were not affected by the incident.

On 7 February 2014, Tonio Borg, European Commissioner for Health, called once more on the Russian Federation to engage in constructive talks on the issue of the Russian ban on EU pig exports.
