On 13 January 2014 EU High Representative Catherine Ashton met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Sabah, during her visit to the Gulf countries. They discussed the bilateral partnership between Kuwait and the EU, the work of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the challenges of the region and the situation in Syria.
