The European Commission adopted on 15 January 2014 a Communication identifying ten areas in which member states and the European Union should reinforce their actions to prevent all types of extremism that leads to violence, regardless of who inspires it.

These recommendations were the result of the work conducted by the Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) since its creation in 2011. The Communication is also follow-up on conclusions released by the Council of the European Union in June 2013 on extremism and radicalisation.
