Greece will need no further financial bailout agreements from 2014, according to its Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. The financially troubled country's leader announced on the 30 December 2013 that Greece would leave its EU-IMF bailout agreement as planned in 2014. However, Greece was experiencing a sixth year of recession and more than 27% unemployment, leading to doubts among creditors that its weakened economy would be able to continue without more lending assistance from the EU and IMF. On 7 January 2014, Klaus Regling, the head of eurozone's bailout fund (ESM), told those hopes were not realistic. On 10 January 2014, Germany's foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed the reform efforts made by Greece and urged the country to continue the reforms. Spiegel Online International reported in February 2014 that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble was considering a third rescue package for Greece and that the rumour had electrified the struggling nation. Athens wanted to impress its creditors with a stream of good news. But it still had a long list of unkept promises. |
