A Turkish court upheld in October 2013 the convictions of key military officers ruled to have plotted the overthrow of PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government. On 2 January 2014, BBC News reported that the high command of the Turkish armed forces had demanded a retrial for many military officers convicted of plotting to topple the government. In a surprising development the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said on the 6 January 2014 that he favoured the retrial of military officers convicted of plotting to overthrow the government. Deutsche Welle and the BBC suggested that the remarks seem to signal a shift in alliances within the country's power structure. In June 2014 it was reported that the Turkish Constitutional Court had ordered that 230 people sentenced to jail in the 'Operation Sledgehammer' case should be released on the grounds that they did not have a fair trial. |
