The European Commission on 21 November 2013 welcomed the European Parliament's adoption of Horizon 2020, the EU research and innovation programme for the period 2014-2020.

With a budget of nearly €80m over seven years, Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU research programme yet, and one of the biggest publicly funded worldwide. It is also one of only very few programmes in the next EU budget to see a strong increase in funding – a nearly 30% in real terms over the Seventh Framework Programme.
