At least 18 people were killed in flooding prompted by a cyclone and heavy rain that lashed the Italian island of Sardinia on 19 November 2013. The storm caused extensive damage to farms and disrupted a number of flights to and from mainland Italy. Prime Minister Enrico Letta declared a state of emergency, speaking of a 'national tragedy'.
