The High Level Group of the European Innovation Partnership for Smart Cities and Communities on 14 October 2013 adopted the Partnership's 'Strategic Implementation Plan' (SIP).

The plan will serve as the basis for speeding up the deployment of Smart City solutions in Europe. A facilitator for any city becoming smart and developing innovative services in this sense is if they can rely on fast, reliable and secure networks that ensure high quality connectivity.

The Strategic Implementation Plan focuses on three specific areas: sustainable districts, sustainable urban mobility, and integrated infrastructures across energy, ICT and transport.

The European Commission is expected to invest around €200m to create Smart Cities in the next two years.
