EU countries have offered to help destroy Syria's chemical weapons as part of a Russia-US deal. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and US secretary of state John Kerry agreed the plan in Geneva on the 14 September 2013 after three days of talks. BBC reported on the 16 September 2013 that France, Britain and the US would seek a "strong" UN resolution with "serious consequences" if Syria fails to hand over its chemical weapons, according to the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. It was reported on the 17 September 2013 that France was trying to persuade Russia to support a UN Security Council resolution on Syria. On the 22 September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the country could send its military personnel to help in the proposed operation to eliminate Syria's chemical arms. On the 26 September, EUObserver reported that EU Council chief Herman Van Rompuy has told during his UN address that the recent deal on Syria's chemical weapons could help end the civil war. |
