Horst Seehofer's Christian Social Union (CSU) won an absolute majority in Bavaria's regional election on the 15 September 2013, according to exit polls. The CSU's coalition partner, the Free Democrats, failed to win representation.

If the result was replicated in the federal election on the 22 September 2013 Chancellor Merkel would need to seek new allies with whom to form a coalition government.
