On his return to Turkey on the 6 June 2013 Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for protests across the country to end immediately.

At Istanbul airport he told crowds of supporters who were welcoming him home from a four-day North Africa tour that the protests bordered on illegality.

But as he spoke, thousands of anti-government protesters were also rallying in Istanbul's Taksim Square.

EUObserver reported on the 7 June 2013 that French, German and EU officials had criticised Turkish police brutality after the week of 'shocking' violence. Some suggested that the events could harm plans to restart EU-Turkey accession talks.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Štefan Füle met Mr Erdoğan on the 7 June 2013 at a pre-arranged meeting. According to EurActiv on the 10 June 2013, both sides sparred over this issue.

On the 11 June 2013, Mr Erdogan warned that he would not show 'any more tolerance' for protests.

Mr Erdogan held talks with selected members of a key protest group on the 13 June 2013, hours after issuing a 'final warning' to demonstrators.
