Although Lithuania was the first among the Baltic states in line to join the euro in 2007 thanks to it fast growing economy and its re-gained independence from the Soviet Union the European Commission (EC) finally prevented Lithuania from becoming part of the single currency as the country's inflation rate had been too high.

Despite the setback, 2013 Lithuania is pressing ahead with its second attempt to join the eurozone, eyeing 2015 as a target date.
