French police detained five suspects on the 7 June 2013 over the killing of 18-year-old student and anti-fascist activist Clément Méric, who died following a fight with a group of skinheads in Paris on the 5 June 2013. The murder was condemned by all sides of the political spectrum, and protests took place in several cities around France. For Libération, the event 'follows the escalation of violent protests against gay marriage'. The French government said it wanted to ban extreme-right groups – a complex task complicated by the hydra-like nature of the hard-core right. |
