European Geostrategy published this 'Long Post', which is by Luis Simón, a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for European Studies (Free University of Brussels). The Long Post looks at the contents of the 2012-2013 French strategic defence review, which culminated in a White Paper on Security and Defence. It argued that – contrary to the doomsayers – France’s ability to project power has largely been maintained, while the country has started a transformation of its armed forces to undertake presence duties, particularly in the geographic axis running across the top of Africa – from the Gulf of Guinea to the Persian Gulf.
