The European Union's Commissioner for Regional Affairs launched on 6 February 2013 the restoration work for Italy's Pompeii site. The European Commission approved funding for this project in March 2012. A sum of €41.8 million from the European Regional Developent Fund (ERDF) was allocated to it, a substantial part of a total funding of €105 million. In 2000-2006, the ERDF had already supported 22 restoration projects on the Pompeii site worth €7.7 million. In October 2011 torrential rainfall caused serious damage to the site, adding to violent storms which in 2010 had caused the partial collapse of the Schola Armatorum. |
