Report of the launch of a 'Constitutional Convention' in Ireland on the 1 December 2012. It is made up of politicians and randomly selected citizens and has been asked to consider whether the voting age should be reduced to 17 and the President’s term from seven years to five as part of a wider series of potential constitutional reforms. Places are also available for participants from the Northern Ireland Assembly. But as the Irish body held its first meeting critics accused the political establishment of turning it into a worthless talking shop. The convention has not been specifically directed to consider a range of key issues that contributed to the financial crisis, such as the centralisation of decision making and a lack of political accountability. |
