EUObserver reported that comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the 29 October 2012 that Germany considered the Unite Kingdom an important and needed member of the European Union, just days after London spelled out its deep ambivalence about its EU future.

Separately, ex-UK Prime Minister Tony Blair in a speech to the Council for the Future of Europe in Berlin on the 29 October 2012 said that creating a two-speed Europe would put the EU on a 'path to break up'.
