EUObserver and other sources reported on the 2 October 2012 that hundreds of defects have been found throughout Europe’s nuclear reactors and mostly in France, according to a EU stress test report leaked to the German and French media. EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger presented the report publicly on the 4 October 2012. The Commission reported that the standards of safety of nuclear power plants in Europe were generally high but further improvements in the safety features of almost all European nuclear power plants were recommended. Nevertheless national safety authorities came to the conclusion that no closure of Nuclear Power Plants was warranted. The tests had established that not all safety standards promoted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and not all international best practices were applied in all Member States. The Commission would follow closely the implementation of the recommendations and would at the same time propose legislative measures to further enhance nuclear safety in Europe. was due to present the final report and recommendations at the European Council summit on 18-19 October 2012. |
