The European Parliament frequently receives petitions from EU citizens. A number of these petitions relate to the improper implementation of EU waste legislation, which causes negative environmental and health impacts. For the purposes of this study, twelve petitions were selected and analysed in detail. The selected petitions relate to deficiencies in the waste management system, the operation of existing installations (mainly incinerators and landfills) and the permitting procedure for new facilities. Based on the identified problems, a number of recommendations are put forward to improve the situation.
