Greek police said on the 6 August 2012 that more than 1,600 illegal immigrants would be deported following a major crackdown in Athens in the previous days. More than 6,000 people had been detained, though most were released. At the same time about 1,800 Greek police officers were posted to the 200km Greek-Turkish border marked by the river Evros to join Greek soldiers and the EU’s Frontex mission patrolling the river bank. Immigrants from Asia and Africa had long used Greece as a gateway into EU countries. Public Order and Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Dendias defended the campaign saying failure to crack down on illegal immigration would lead to social 'collapse'. |
