Greece’s international lenders called off a mission to Athens on the 24 June 2012, only hours before they were due to arrive – because the new prime minister and finance minister were both still in hospital.

The delay was seen to highlight the paralysis of Greece’s new government in the face of calls from the EU and International Monetary Fund to hasten reforms – even as Athens appeared poised to reject the most pressing of these demands and ask for more time to meet targets.
