This FRA opinion of 31 May, follows a request from European Parliament to the agency to carry out a legal analysis of the proposed EU law on the property consequences of registered international partnerships. The proposed regulation does not offer civil partners the same choice as married couples over which national law applies. The FRA's opinion concludes that the proposed law does not provide convincing reasons for denying registered partners a comparable choice as would be offered to married couples. This runs a serious risk of violating the principle of equal treatment under EU law.
