Features report on the continuing negotiations between the Greek President Karolos Papoulias and leaders of political parties in an attempt to create a viable Greek government following the general election of 6 May 2012. Meetings on the 14 May 2012 ended without agreement. By the 16 May 2012 news sources were reported that Greece was heading for a fresh general election after its political parties failed to form a national unity government because of opposition from the anti-bailout Syriza coalition. The leader of Greece's caretaker government was announced on the 16 May 2012 as the Council of State president Panayiotis Pikramenos. The likeliest date for a second round of elections was 17 June 2012. |
