The BBC reported in April 2012 that Spain would reimpose border checks for a European Central Bank (ECB) meeting in Barcelona in May 2012, suspending the EU's passport-free travel Schengen treaty.

The Spanish interior ministry believed anti-austerity protesters could try to disrupt the 3 May 2012 ECB summit.

Only a threat to public order is seen as grounds for restoring border controls under the Schengen Treaty.
