The Iceland gender equality act dates back to 1975, the current having been enforced in 2008. Iceland is characterised by a high participation of women in the labour market but large gender gaps exist nevertheless. New legislation on gender quotas on company boards aims at increasing the decision making power of women in economic life. Some active measures have also been implemented in the field of gender based violence.
