Ukraine’s jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko is ill, in pain and not receiving proper medical care, according to one of five foreign doctors who examined her in February 2012 as part of an independent humanitarian mission organised by western governments. Though Ms Tymoshenko’s family and lawyers have repeatedly made such assertions, the doctor’s comments amount to the first independent confirmation that Ms Tymoshenko is ill and suffering in prison. It could further strain relations between the west and Ukraine’s president Viktor Yanukovich, already under fire for allegedly persecuting rivals as part of a broader rollback of democracy. |
