For more than two decades, Scottish nationalists have used the promise of 'independence in Europe' to promote their political goals.

The slogan was supposed to convey the idea that Scotland could swap the stability of the UK with greater freedom and prosperity within the European Union.

Now, as the eurozone slips deeper into financial crisis, such arguments are being called into question, with potentially damaging implications for the Scottish National Party and its push for independence.
