Thousands of Greek workers joined the seventh general strike of the year the 1 December 2011 to protest against the government’s plans to continue with an austerity drive that had cut salaries, pensions and layoffs in the state sector. The protest ended without a single canister of teargas being fired, according to police. In the previous general strike in October 2011, more than 100 police and demonstrators were injured in two days of riots, 20 people were arrested and one man died of heart failure after protesters were tear-gassed. |
