West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted by mosquitoes (mainly of the genus Culex), with wild birds as its natural hosts. Human cases have been reported from several countries since the 1960s, but it appears that the frequency of outbreaks may have accelerated over the past 15 years. The pattern of local outbreaks in successive years suggests that the virus is endemic in Europe. This Rapid Risk Assessment update was issued on 19 September 2011. |
